I just got a new windows mobile 6 based phone (HTC Mogul 6800) and naturally I added the sprint data package to my phone for $15 per month. I then asked them about tethering the phone as a modem with my laptop and i was informed it would cost an extra $40 for that ability. Screw that. I wouldn't use it enough to justify that cost, considering my bill is already around $150 a month.
I was very excited when I came across this little instructional video about how to make the phone act as a wifi router using the phone's data package - without sprint knowing its coming from a computer. This means that there are no additional tethering package fees!
I have already tested this out on my Mogul 6800 and it worked wonderfully. I was absolutely amazed that I was able to get a 1mbps connection out of it considering I'm out in the middle of nowhere, and my $80 "high speed" home connection is only 1mbps!
The link provided in the notes for this video no longer works to get the wmWifiRouter software, but if you google "wmwifirouter rapidshare" you can find a copy very easily.
There is one additional step I read about that was not mentioned in this video. According to a user over at ppcgeeks.com, its vital that you make a minor registry edit in order to prevent Sprint from detecting the computer connection.
First you will need to install a registry editor if you do not already have one. Once you have your registry editor open:
