Book Review: Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs

I recently started watching the TV show Bones and quickly became a fan. I noticed in the beginning of each episode during the intro credits that it was based off novels by Kathy Reichs, and having liked the show, I decided to check out the novels. Deja Dead is the first novel in the series and so I figured it would be the best place to start.
Deja Dead's protagonist is Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, working in Montreal doing the standard forensic lab work with skeletal remains to solve cases and catch murderers. She starts to feel that there is a pattern in the deaths of a couple female victims and insists there is a serial killer responsible. The head detective, Monsieur Claudel, disagrees and is not easily persuaded otherwise, leaving Temperance no choice but to investigate the murders herself with the body count rising. What she uncovers nearly kills her.
At first, I was very disappointed that the novel's Temperance Brennan shares nearly no character traits with the television's version of Temperance Brennan, or "Bones" as she is nicknamed on screen. Besides the fact they both pee sitting down and play with bones, well, they might as well have different names. The novel character is a catholic, reacts on emotion over logic, and has no self defense skills. The Bones version is an atheist that objectively and brutally uses logic and can whoop some ass.
Once I got over this little annoyance, I warmed up to the story and it quickly became one of those page-turners that are hard to put down. The story, while starting off rather slow, keeps you engaged throughout, winding up to a climax and resolve that will put you on the edge of your seat. Being Kathey Reichs' first novel I would say she did very well making a first impression in the literary community. I plan on reading the rest of her books, especially those in the Temperance Brennan series.

I recently stated watching Bones over the summer. It really captivated me. When I saw that Bones had published a book called Red Tape White Bones, I had to know if it was a real book, that's how I came to te presence of this website. And now I also know why her character is named Brennan. Thanks =)
