Google wants in on the Wikipedia game. On Friday, the search engine announced the creation of "Knol," a project that allows users to create their own Wikipedia-like pages on specific subjects. The big difference: users put their names--and Google's advertisements--on their knol pages and split the revenue with the search company.
Many will agree that google is the forerunner when it comes to taking the internet to new levels. From its revolutionary search engine in which the whole company is based off, to its adsense & adwords network, to its code repository, to gmail and everything in between. Well, the internet giant has now released confirmation of a new service that could re-revolutionize making profit online for content writers.
Right now, one of the biggest trends in making money online is writing useful, precise, and keyword rich content articles and then submitting to either personal blogs, or large article repository sites. This is a tried and true method of not only generating nice traffic from search engines, but also provide a means to make profit by strategically placing contextual ads relating to the content in which you wrote - google adsense being the most popular ad format.
Google's new service, named Knol, will be an online encyclopedia like wikipedia, the difference being that google will have ads placed on the site, and content submitters will earn revenue generated from ad clicks. Wikipedia on the other hand offers no financial return for the people who contribute their time and energy into editing and writing content - yet wikipedia is insanely popular and is quickly becoming THE source of information for many people seeking knowledge.
So if wikipedia is that successful from people donating their time for free, just imagine the competition and rushing there will be to fill up Knol with knowledge with the promise of revenue sharing for those who contribute. I think this is just another example of why google is at the forefront of internet advances. Some will consider this is a bitter sweet situation.
A good thing that will come to this is that there will be more content on the internet, making it easier to find information you need; and because it will be a google service with their ads, chances are that it will be moderated quite well to ensure quality content is provided. A questionably negative result of this in some peoples minds is that google's own service will start to show up more and more as the top search results, making it harder for others to get a fair shot at #1. I personally do not have much of a worry of this, mainly because if you know anything about SEO techniques, you know that most #1 spots were not gained by fair tactics. I am tired of searching for something and getting a bunch of results that got their placement using black hat techniques to advertise sites which provide me with absolutely nothing useful, except more ads!
