Where is God's snowflake machine?
Probably the most common argument that creationists use in defense of their crazy delusions is that if something looks designed, and its not designed by humans, then there is no possible other explanation except that an invisible all-powerful god did it; and of course that god is always the Christian god, never Zeus or Mithra, but I digress.
So if this statement is true, I would like a creationist to answer a question thats been on my mind; does God hand-design every snowflake? 1,000,000,000,000,000 cubic feet[1] of snow drops on this earth every year; that is a lot of snowflakes that have relatively unique and irreducibly complex designs.
They are irreducibly complex so that if you take away any extending arm the symmetrical pattern is destroyed. Humans surely do not design all the snowflakes that fall; so according to creationists, God must be hand designing every snowflake. Sounds like quite a hobby to me!
Ive always wondered what God does in his immense and never-ending free-time besides giving kids cancer and ignoring the prayers of amputees - but now that question is finally answered; he loves to design unique snowflakes! And to think those godless heathen scientists actually think theres a natural occurring process that causes snowflakes to form. They are going to hell for sure by not giving God credit for his amazing designs.

Im fully atheist but this argument is rather faulty. God is, by definition, omnipotent. That means ALL powerful, and hand designing each and every snowflake is still ZERO work in the face of infinite power. Not to mention he could have simply created the laws of physics and let everything work itself out on its own. If we are to beat religion we must do so using sound logic, not using the same tactics they use!

My point wasn't so much that a god such as the Christian God couldn't do it, but more to poke fun at creationists who ignore evidence in lieu of ridiculous supernatural claims.
We know how and why snow flakes form (among all sorts of other crystallizing structures) and it would be ridiculous to assume because it appears to be designed, that there is a designer and not a natural cause. Just as it's ridiculous to throw out evidence and deny evolution because it doesn't agree with Genesis.

Laughed my arse off at reading this - nice question Scott.

Does God hand-craft every snow flake Himself? Well, I believe that God invented time itself, so, yeah. Why not? I mean, just because the snow flakes form naturally doesn't mean God didn't write the rules that causes this to happen.

If God is in fact real, he surely did write the "rules" for the natural formation of snow flakes... but he also wrote the rules for the natural formation and evolution of creatures.
This post isn't really against the concept of god, but rather against the ideas that creationists have (that all animal "kinds" were created at the same time 6000-10000 years ago with magic)

"God invented time itself..."... Interesting thoughts. So what happened before time was invented?
Joseph Smith Apr 11, 2009
nothing "happened", as happening is our word to describe something that goes on in time. Maybe things Occured instead... but it doesn't matter... because we simply can't know. All of this makes no sense.
Mikey Feb 18, 2010
You make no sense. The difference between occurred (Which you misspelled) and happened is minimal. If things can occur instantaneously then they can also happen instantaneously. Therefore your explanation makes no sense.
As time is merely a concept of a passing of events why would it take god 6 days to create everything if he/she/it could have done so without the passage of events? As all things would have happened instantly god would have already been aware of the sins of mankind and is therefore a total twa* for going ahead with his/her/its shit*y plans.
