Tip of the day: Locking your computer from being used

The best defense is a good offense

Have you ever been working on a real important document or such and have to leave the computer right in the middle? If you just leave the computer open for use with your work up on the screen, someone could easily come and mess with it rather it be your kid by accident, or a co-worker who wants to see you cry by doing something malicious. The solution to prevent this from becoming a possibility? Lock your computer whenever you leave it!

Locking in Windows

In windows you can either goto the start menu, and click the lock button, or simply press the windows key + L. Your account will need to have a password set on it in order for this to be effective.

Locking in Linux

In linux, as as Windows, you can goto the main menu (the equivalent of window's start menu) and click on "lock session". Alternatively, you can go into your shortcut control panel and setup a keyboard shortcut for quickly locking the screen.

Locking in Mac OS/X

Goto the Keychain Access utility under Applications -> Utility. Select "Show Status in Menu Bar" from the View menu at the top. A lock will appear in the upper right corner of your taskbar. Now when you click on the lock, a "lock screen" option will appear in the drop-down.
